Speech-language assessment - orofacial myofunctional disorder
Processus
Generally, a speech-language assessment for an orofacial myofunctional disorder only takes one visit. Orofacial myofunctional disorders include lisping, atypical swallowing and poor orofacial habits. They can be treated in children and adults alike.
Treatment can start at age 5, depending on the problem. It may even start earlier in the case of poor orofacial habits (e.g. thumb sucking, prolonged soother use). If you have concerns about a younger child, you can talk to a speech-language pathologist to obtain their opinion.
Treatment for orofacial myofunctional disorders includes, among others, eliminating harmful orofacial habits and tongue thrust when the person is resting, speaking and swallowing.
