How to clean your hearing aids
Cleaning your hearing aids
It’s extremely important to thoroughly clean your custom earmolds, receivers, the domes of your hearing aids and your custom earplugs. Doing so will help prevent ear infections.
Daily hearing aid use, as well as contact with earwax and bacteria, can irritate the outer walls of your ear canal and cause earaches. That’s why it’s important to make sure your devices are well-maintained.
Recommendations and daily maintenance
It’s important to know that each hearing aid is different when it comes to cleaning. For that reason, it’s best to check with your audioprosthetist or specialized educator to learn about maintaining your hearing aids. At the same time, they will be able to explain how to properly use maintenance products.
Ideally, your hearing aids should be cleaned nightly, and your earplugs should be cleaned after each use. There are several tools and products available to help you with cleaning. For everyday cleaning, we recommend using VapoLobe or ServiLobe.
- VapoLobe: Every day, spray the cleaning solution on a tissue and gently wipe the part of the hearing aid that is inserted in the ear.
- ServiLobe: Gently wipe the cleaning towelette around the part of the hearing aid that is inserted in the ear.
After cleaning, make sure to open the battery compartment (to stop the hearing aids from turning on, extending the battery life) and place the hearing aids in a ProtecLobe container with a drying tablet. Make sure that the lid is closed tightly so that as much humidity can be removed as possible. Verify that your drying tablet is working at its full capacity. Change it every three months. Always keep the container closed.
Hearing aid users should also plan to visit the clinic twice a year to have their hearing aids checked and cleaned. During these visits, the audioprosthetist will clean your earmolds thoroughly, using clinic-exclusive products. Additionally, some parts will be replaced as needed to make sure that the devices are working well.
