Solutions for Better Hearing
Hearing loss can affect different everyday situations. For instance, it may become more difficult to hold a conversation on the phone or in a noisy environment, to understand the TV or to watch a show from the back of the theatre.
Fortunately, there are many solutions for people with hearing loss.
Hearing Aids
Wearing hearing aids is a good option for many. An audioprosthetist will help you choose the model that best suits your needs.
Your audioprosthetist can also help you choose accessories that will allow you to take full advantage of all the features of your hearing aids.
A remote control can let you control the volume and programming of your hearing aids from a distance. But don’t worry, your audioprosthetist will program your hearing aids first, according to your listening habits.
Many hearing aids can also be adjusted directly from your cellphone. If you’re interested in this option, mention it to your audioprosthetist when choosing your hearing aids, since some models may not be compatible with your cellphone. Depending on the model, your cellphone may also allow you to hear phone calls directly in your hearing aids, which makes listening much simpler. If you don’t have a cellphone or if yours is not compatible, you can use wireless accessories provided by your hearing aids’ manufacturer to make listening to phone conversations, television or music easier.
You can also pair your hearing aids with a remote microphone, which can be put on a table or attached to the shirt of the person talking to you. You will then be able to hear the sound from the microphone directly in your hearing aids.
Assistive Listening Devices
Assistive listening devices are made to ease the everyday life of people with hearing loss. They include television listening systems, amplified phones, adapted alarm clocks and adapted alarm systems. These devices can compensate for hearing loss in situations where not hearing well may be frustrating.
Communication Strategies
You can also read the guide Communication strategies for hearing-impaired people, which is available in all Lobe clinics.
You will learn tips that will make it easier for you to communicate with the people around you. This guide is designed for both hearing-impaired people and their loved ones. It is full of useful information. Ask for a copy!
Audioprosthetists and specialized educators are there to guide you towards the solution that best suits your needs. Some devices may be reimbursed by RAMQ or CNESST. Talk to your audioprosthetist about it!
Don't forget!
An assessment by an audioprosthetist is required to determine which hearing aid suits the patient's needs.
