Videoconference, an effective way to communicate with friends
Videoconference has become exponentially more popular over the past few months. However, people who are less comfortable with new technologies may feel caught off guard by this new means of communication.
While videoconference may seem challenging, they’re an effective way to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues alike. Recently, they’ve also helped limit the consequences of isolation.
If you have hearing loss, videoconference platforms can be an excellent way of staying in touch while staying safe. They let you see the other person’s face, so you can read their lips in addition to seeing and hearing them.
That’s why we encourage people to explore videoconference. Once you’ve mastered the technology, it’s fairly easy to use.
Here are a few important things to know about videoconference platforms:
- You need a stable and fast Internet connection as well as a device (computer, tablet, or smartphone).
- There are many different videoconference platforms, so make sure to choose the one your friends and family are using. If you’re using a computer, you can keep the link handy by saving it to your favourites. If you’re using a tablet or smartphone, make sure to install the app by visiting the App Store or Google Play.
- In some cases, the other person may email you a link. In that case, all you need to do is click on the link and the video chat will start automatically.
And that’s it! Now you’re ready to video chat with your friends and family.

If you wear hearing aids, make sure to ask your audioprosthetist whether they’re compatible with your smartphone, tablet, or computer. If they are, their Bluetooth technology will let you use your hearing aids as headphones. That means the other person’s voice can be transmitted directly to your hearing aids. Most new hearing aids models are now compatible with Apple and Android products.
