Focusing on speech: A device to improve speech understanding

Dispositif pour améliorer la compréhension de la parole

Although hearing aids provide excellent speech signal, there are times this signal becomes difficult to hear because of the auditory environment. Distance from the speaker (listening in an audience), competing speech signals (listening in a restaurant), noise (listening in a car), and room acoustics (listening in an auditorium) are all examples of difficult listening situations which makes focusing on speech understanding harder, even for people with good hearing.

Connectivity devices are an interesting alternative for hearing aids wearers who want to get optimal speech at all times. For instance, using the SoundGate (SG) microphone in combination with the SoundGate 3 Bluetooth wireless connectivity device provides improved hearing of the target speech signal.

When a speaker wears the SG mic and speaks directly into it, the SG mic transmits the voice signal to the SoundGate 3 device, which in turn transmits it directly into the wearer’s hearing aids, decreasing distance effects or reverberation.

Whether the SoundGate mic is used by a dinner companion, a presenter, a passenger in the car, or a tour guide during a vacation, it will help the hearing-impaired person focus on speech, improve speech understanding and follow the conversation.

To determine which hearing aids are best for you, consult an audioprosthetist.
