Hearing loss simulator

April 23, 2015
Day after day, your ears are submitted to all sorts of noises. Sometimes, noise sources that we think harmless can actually damage our hearing.

That’s why whe have created two awareness tools: the hearing loss simulator, which reproduces how hearing loss can affect sound perception, and the sound intensity scale, which is used to raise people’s awareness towards the risks of noise on hearing.

Sound intensity scale1

The sound intensity scale makes it possible for you to assess the risk of noise on your hearing depending on the number of decibels. The higher the decibels (towards the red zone), the greater the risks for the hearing.

Note that the sound intensity level can vary from an object or sound environment to the other (Ex.1: my hairdryer doesn’t have the same intensity as my mother’s. Ex. 2: Rock concerts don’t generate the same sound intensity. At the same concert, the intensity varies depending on where you are in the room, and on your position with respect to the speakers).

Barème d'intensité sonore

  • 15 to 45 dB : Comfortable
  • 50 to 75 dB : Harmless
  • 80 to 95 dB : Hearing protection recommended
  • 100 to 115 dB : Extremely loud, hearing protection strongly recommended
  • 120 to 125 dB : At this level, any exposure can cause hearing damage and ringing in ears
  • 130 to 135 dB : Immediate pain threshold
  • 140 to 155 dB : Maximum exposure tolerated, even if wearing hearing protection
  • 160 dB : Immediate physical damage

The longer the exposure time, the greater the risks of suffering hearing damage. After a sufficient rest period in a calm environment, hearing goes back to normal. Auditory fatigue is the stage just before permanent hearing loss. The duration of the rest period must be at least twice as long as the noise exposure time.

Simulateur de perte auditive2

The hearing loss simulator below will allow you to discover how a hearing loss can affect sound perception.

To use the simulator effectively:

Click on the Normal hearing sound bite and set your computer’s volume to a level you find comfortable. After that, and without changing the volume, listen to the other sond bites; you will hear how a hard-of-hearing person with a moderate or severe hearing loss can hear..

Musique  Music – Sound bite

Moto  Motorcycle – Sound bite

Conversation  Conversation – Sound bite

If you think that you may have a hearing loss, book an appointment with an audiologist working in a Lobe clinic by dialing 1-866-411-LOBE (5623).
